Byzantium in Istanbul, or: Istanbul is Constantinople (among other things)
By Patricia Blessing, 2014 H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellow
Just hours before I sat down to write this text on March 19, 2016, another suicide bomb claimed victims in Turkey, this time on Istiklal Caddesi, a lively shopping street at the center of Istanbul’s European side. Last week, an attack in one of Ankara’s main public transportation hubs pointed to further troubles, and it is now clearer how soon they are to some. So far, I have only very occasionally touched upon the political reality of the Middle East, and increasingly Europe.

Back to the City: Urbanism, Density and Housing 1976–2016
On 12 May 1976, Secretary of State for Scotland Bruce Millan announced the cancellation of the plans to expand the village of Stonehouse outside Glasgow into a New Town of 40,000 inhabitants, and the redirection of the corresponding funds to the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR). After three decades, the era of enhanced greenfield developments outside British cities was finally drawing to an end, and policy was increasingly focusing on the renewal of the inner city as a place of residence. The (May 5–6, 2016, Glasgow School of Art) will examine the architectural outcomes of the “return to the inner city,” the political and socio-economic background, as well as the different ways in which living in the inner city was both conceptualised and realised.
