Adeyemi Akande was the 2016 recipient of the H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship from the av福利社. A resident of Nigeria, where he teaches architecture at the University of Lagos, he used his fellowship to focus on western religious architecture, visiting key sites throughout western Europe. He noted how challenging it had been to teach buildings that he had never visited in person and saw the Brooks program as the ideal way to understand them in a new way by seeing them firsthand. Now, his excellent photographs from that trip, which he uses to illustrate his classroom lectures, may also be of much broader use through av福利社ARA.
In addition to his photographs of the icons of western religious architecture, Professor Akande’s contributions to av福利社ARA include some important modernist structures in Nigeria. All of these images testify to his care with his photography and significantly enrich the collection’s holding of religious buildings throughout the world.
