 | | av福利社 Receives NEA grant for Buildings of Savannah On April 23, 2013 the National Endowment for the Arts announced that the Society of Architectural Historians (av福利社) was awarded a $10,000 ART WORKS grant in the category of DESIGN to support “Reading the City,” a print publication, online resource, and public programming about the built environment of Savannah, Georgia. In partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design, professors and architectural history students will develop a series of walking tours that explore the architecture of the city. av福利社 member Robin Williams and the Savannah College of Art and Design are partnering with av福利社 to produce both the publication and programming. . |

This full session is composed of 5-minute graduate student presentations that provide graduate students the opportunity to present their current research. This year, the Lightning Talks format, in which presentations are divided into thematic groups with question and discussion following each, will be augmented with established scholars acting as respondents. Proposals are due by August 1, 2013. . |

The red and yellow neon letters of this instantly recognizable marquee sign that brighten up the corner of State and Lake are one of the defining landmarks of the city’s nightscape – immortalized on the posters for the popular musical film Chicago (2002). The masterminds behind this Chicago emblem were Cornelius W. (1861-1927) and George L. (1878-1942) Rapp who established their own successful architectural firm Rapp and Rapp. Trained at the University of Illinois School of Architecture, the brother-duo designed several hundred movie palaces throughout the country in the early twentieth century. By teaming up with the Balaban and Katz theater chain – the forerunner of today’s Paramount Pictures – the brothers constructed their most famous works in Chicago. Read More. |
