The theme of the gala is "A Foundation for Preservation," honoring those individuals who initiated early preservation work in Chicago and continue to support and encourage preservation. av福利社 will present five Awards for Architectural Excellence in: Preservation Advocacy, Stewardship of the Built Environment, Architectural Conservation, Architectural Media and Conservation of the Natural Environment. |

The largest international survey of contemporary architecture in North America will take place in Chicago in the fall of 2015. The event will include robust public programming and exhibitions featuring the world’s leading architectural talent and will be presented by the City of Chicago, the Graham Foundation, and the recently-formed Chicago Architecture Biennial. |

Since I am addressing a forum of intellectuals with a keen interest in history and culture, many of you might already know this fact. I might have heard it a time or two in life, only to forget, and then be reminded again in Mexico City. I am not ashamed to admit that. Why is this tidbit of information important to the history of architecture and urbanism in Mexico City, you ask? It has everything to do with memory of place, transnational dialogues, regional differences, and most immediately, place names. |

Note: This essay is a revised version of the plenary address delivered at the Society of Architectural Historians Annual Conference in Austin, Texas, on April 14, 2014.
In June of 2013, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences released a report that is or should by now be well-known to many of you: “The Heart of the Matter: The Humanities and Social Sciences for a Vibrant, Competitive, and Secure Nation.” I attended “The Heart of the Matter” launch on June 19th at the Capital Building in Washington, DC, where the project’s leaders delivered brief declarations about the importance of the humanities for their own lives, and especially for the nation’s health. |

| | ACLS Announces the 2013-2014 Programs in China Studies Fellows and Grantees The American Council of Learned Societies announced the results of the 2013-2014 competitions of the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies and of the Comparative Perspectives on Chinese Culture and Society program, supported by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange.
There were three competitions in the Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Program in China Studies, offering predissertation-summer grants, postdoctoral fellowships, and collaborative reading-workshop grants. The competition for the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation program offered grants for planning meetings, workshops, and conferences. All combined, 31 fellowships and grants were awarded from over 190 applications. |

Senate Confirms William D. Adams as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities The United States Senate voted on July 9 to confirm William D. “Bro” Adams as the 10th chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Adams, president of Colby College in Waterville, Maine from 2000 until his retirement on June 30, 2014, is a committed advocate for liberal arts education and brings to the Endowment a long record of leadership in higher education and the humanities. |

Chapter and Partner News The Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter of av福利社 will hold its 2014 conference, "Building Collections, Building Community," on October 3-5 in Seattle.
Join the Southern California Chapter of av福利社 for a special tour of the exhibit "Climate Change: Mid-Century Modern" in La Jolla, California, on August 23. Activities include a guided tour, a talk by architectural historian Diane Kane and the project architect about the recent adaptive reuse project for Wisteria Cottage, and a walking tour of the surrounding historic Scripps/Gill Cultural District.
The Southeast Chapter of av福利社 announced that the Spring 2014 issue of the SEav福利社 Newsletter would be the last printed issue as the newsletter transitions to a digital format. The first digital issue will be published this summer.
