honorees    av福利社 Honors Pete Landon, Sarah Herda and Richard H. Driehaus at Gala
av福利社 held its 7th annual Awards Gala on Friday, November 4, at The Racquet Club of Chicago. Over 180 members of av福利社 and the Chicago architectural community came together to honor Graham Foundation director Sarah Herda, philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus and architect Peter Landon, FAIA. The event raised over $126,000 for av福利社’s educational programs and the ongoing restoration of its headquarters, the Landmark Charnley-Persky House

For av福利社 Archipedia 3.0, we invite contributors to utilize this robust digital content and associated metadata to produce scholarship that will interpret the built environment of the United States—buildings, infrastructure, and landscapes—through thematic and place-based essays. av福利社 is happy to announce that five of the book projects funded by the av福利社/Mellon Author Awards, which the society has administered since 2013, have been published to date. (Since this feature ran last month, two additional books have been added: A House in the Sun: Modern Architecture and Solar Energy in the Cold War by Daniel A. Barber and Becoming an Architect in Renaissance Italy: Art, Science, and the Career of Baldassarre Peruzzi by Ann C. Huppert.)

     
students    New Charnley-Persky House "Charrette Tours" for Architecture Students
This past year, the Chicago House Museums Collective, also known as At Home in Chicago (Charnley-Persky House is a member), discussed the recent book by Franklin D. Vagnone and Deborah E. Ryan, Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums (2016). The manifesto calls for America’s house museums to take new approaches and expand their purpose beyond the traditional museum, creating more inclusive, interactive, and engaging experiences for visitors.

     
    Announcing New Jav福利社 Editors
av福利社 is pleased to announce that two new Editors have been appointed to the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (Jav福利社). Keith Eggener, the Marion D. Ross Distinguished Professor of Architectural History at University of Oregon has been named the Jav福利社 Editor Designate for 2017 and will assume the three-year Jav福利社 Editorship in 2018 when current Editor Patricia Morton’s term comes to an end. In addition, Alka Patel, associate professor of architectural history at the University of California, Irvine, has agreed to serve as a Jav福利社 Book Review Editor and will review books on architecture in Africa, Asia and Europe before 1750.

     
Nebraska    av福利社 Archipedia: Nebraska's 100 Classic Buildings Completed
With the addition of fifty new entries, Nebraska's 100 Classic Buildings are now complete on av福利社 Archipedia. From the Bordeaux Trading Post to the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, state coordinators H. Keith Sawyers and Peter Olshavsky have contributed a series of entries that explore the architectural history of the state of Nebraska.

     
    Highlights from av福利社ARA: Commerce, Part 1
The offerings in av福利社ARA of images related to commerce are so vast that we decided to break it into parts. This month we take a first look at retail. These images include eye-catching signs, inviting entrances, a very wide span of display choices, and architecture from street stalls to grand shopping palaces.

     
    Study Day Report: Louis Kahn in San Diego and La Jolla

With the generous support of a Scott Opler Endowment for New Scholars Fellowship, I was able to attend av福利社’s “Louis Kahn Study Day” on Friday, November 4. My aim was to think through some of the questions that I am currently exploring in my own work about how, as a living monument, Kahn’s National Assembly Building in Dhaka participates in contemporary political debates about representative democracy in Bangladesh.

     
Tinganes    Connectivity and 'Green' Craft: Exploring the Infrastructure and Architecture of the Faroe Islands

On one particularly foggy morning, my explorations through the Faroe Islands started with an unexpected scene. I was staying in Hoyvík, a suburb of the capital of Tórshavn on Streymoy, and as I traveled down the winding road from my rented room, I watched a series of red-faced pre-teens run up the hill.

: av福利社 invites nominations and self-nominations for two individuals to serve on the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians Editorial Advisory Committee for a term of four years starting April 15, 2017. Deadline January 15.

: av福利社 invites its members, including graduate students and independent scholars, representatives of av福利社 chapters and partner organizations, to chair a session at its 2018 St. Paul conference (April 18-22). Deadline January 17.

On Wednesday, December 14, the Latrobe Chapter will present "." Alexander Nagel will talk about his work on the monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Persepolis and look at early 20th-century polychrome Persian architecture displays in Washington, D.C.

av福利社 welcomes its newest chapter av福利社-PGH (Pittsburgh)! The chapter recently led a walking tour through East Allegheny, which attracted local artists, architects, preservationists, developers, university faculty and a couple of scholars from Germany and Romania. The chapter aims to build a diverse membership of local professionals and academics from nearby universities and museums. Check out the chapter's .

In New Orleans at our annual conference, SEav福利社 announced the recipients of the 2016 publication awards: Kenneth Hafertepe’s book The Material Culture of German Texans (Texas A&M Press); Dana Byrd’s article “Motive Power: Fans, Punkahs, and Fly Brushes in the Antebellum South,” in Buildings and Landscapes; and Louis Nelson’s essay, “The Falmouth House and Store: The Social Landscapes of Caribbean Commerce in the Eighteenth Century,” in Building the British Atlantic World.

On the occasion of its10th anniversary, EAHN invites scholars to join them in rethinking one of their founding questions, namely, how to interpret the inextricable ties between knowledge and geopolitics, an issue that arose from the naming of their network. Papers are invited for a special issue of the EAHN journal . The deadline to submit is December 31.
