The Society of Architectural Historians continues to develop new content and improved technology for av福利社 Archipedia. Over the next two years, we plan to migrate all the content to a new, mobile-friendly platform that will allow for greater accessibility and use.

av福利社 is pleased to announce a fundraiser, May 17-18, 2018, offering two days touring in and around Paris with av福利社 Past President Barry Bergdoll, the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University, and former Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art.

  av福利社/Mellon Author Award-Winning Books Published in 2017
av福利社 is happy to announce that the following publications funded by the av福利社/Mellon Author Awards are now available for purchase. The awards are designed to provide financial relief to scholars who are publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment, and who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images or for commissioning maps, charts or line drawings in their publications. Discount codes are available for some titles.

On Tuesday, November 28, av福利社 will be participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving. Funds raised will help support new content and site enhancements for av福利社 Archipedia, our online encyclopedia of architecture and landscapes in the United States. Your #GivingTuesday donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar through a grant from the NEH.

We are pleased to announce the addition of 100 Illinois Classic Buildings to av福利社 Archipedia. This new material by state coordinators Jean Follett, James Peters, and Elizabeth Milnarik features sites from across the state, including iconic Chicago skyscrapers and the Charnley-Persky House, the headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians.

     
Colbeck    av福利社ARA Highlights: Caribbean Rim
This month focuses on the Caribbean to emphasize how av福利社ARA can serve as a record of buildings threatened by natural disasters. We particularly welcome contributions from scholars with collections of images from Puerto Rico. This set of images includes buildings from the islands as well as sites on the mainland at the edges of the Caribbean, where networks of trade connected ports as far away as Bermuda down to the north coast of South America.

If Gothic vaults were a topic at a roundtable, many would be disposed to discuss their structural brilliance, leaving only little space for the appreciation of them as art. I, quite frankly, agree that the virtuosity of a vault system is probably more recognized as a structural feat than an ornamental one, but in spite of the obvious, I am inclined to see the beauty of the structure first before exploring the structure of the beauty.

 

 
NYBG Call for Fellows 2018-19
The Humanities Institute, a research division within the LuEsther T. Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden, is pleased to offer a full-time, residential Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for 2018 for current Ph.D. students or recent post-doctoral researchers. Candidates are invited to submit a proposal for independent research in the environmental humanities.

: In partnership with GAHTC, av福利社 is offering Research-to-Teaching Grants and Field Seminar Travel Grants. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.

: A joint program of av福利社 and the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), this fellowship permits a graduate student to work on a 12-week HABS history project during the summer of 2018. Deadline December 31.

: Supports the participation of a graduate student in the research and writing for a volume in the Buildings of the United States series and/or av福利社 Archipedia. Deadline January 2.

: av福利社 is accepting session proposals for its 72nd Annual International Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. av福利社 is NOT required to submit a proposal; however, if accepted, non-members will be required to join av福利社 in order to serve as a session chair. Deadline January 16.
 
av福利社 Chapter and Partner News
The date and location for the of the Marion Dean Ross/Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians has been set. The conference will be held in Astoria, Oregon, May 18-20, 2018. The call for papers will open in November. The theme will center around Astoria's traditional maritime history. 

Last month, SEav福利社 greeted nearly 150 participants to its annual conference in Lynchburg, Virginia, where the 2017 Best of the South Preservation Award and Publication Awards were announced. Participants enjoyed engaging presentations, an exhibit on African-American Green Book travel guides, a keynote address by S. Allen Chambers, and a very special evening tour and reception at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest. Visit for more information about the conference and other announcements.

Construction History Society of America announces a Call for Abstracts for their 2018 Biennial Meeting held at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD, May 24-26, 2018. We invite researchers and practitioners from all aspects of the history of construction in the Americas to submit abstracts for presentation. Deadline: November 21, 2017. Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture () and the Cambridge Courtland Russian Art Centre (CCRAC) organized the First International Conference “,” hosted by Centro Studi sulle Arti della Russia (CSAR) at the University Ca' Foscari, Auditorium Santa Margherita, Venice, Italy, in October 25-27, 2017. The conference engaged a broad spectrum of ideas and was free and open to the public.

The Travel Awards Committee of the Visual Resources Association is happy to announce that the website is up for the 2018 conference in Philadelphia (March 27-30).
